One of my most favorites sessions took place at St. Augustine Beach at sunrise on one of the coldest mornings I've ever experienced and with one of the sweetest couples I've ever met! Alexcia and Kenny were troopers that morning!
As it turns out, Alexcia and Kenny got engaged on this same beach! It was also at sunrise just a few months before in July! The temperature was vastly different that summer morning, I'm sure. I loved hearing Alexcia tell their story of the proposal that morning. The number one question that I love to know in any proposal story is "Did you know he was going to propose that morning?" Her answer was along the lines "Of course! Going to the beach at sunrise is not something we typically do!" I love that!
So remember I said it was the coldest morning I ever experienced. Never in my wildest dreams would I envision going to an engagement session in St. Augustine wearing 5 layers to keep warm that morning, including a beanie and gloves! I've never worn so many clothes at the same time and much less during a session. As we got closer to the session date, the forecast was projecting super cold temps for a sunrise session. We couldn't change the date since I was traveling to St. Augustine and could only do sessions this faraway on the weekends. The only other option was to change the outfits Alexcia had in mind for her and Kenny. I reached to her to discuss some other options since the short dress she planned to wear may not work out in 25 degree weather. Her response: Nope! She was determined to wear the dress! Later I found out that her dress she wore on the beach was the same she wore when Kenny proposed. How sweet is that!?
This city is a great location for any session, but St. Augustine for engagement sessions is perfect! There are so many beautiful and romantic locations around the city. We started our session at the beach close to the venue they have booked for their wedding. Afterwards, we went to the downtown area and explored the sites along the way. We planned to stop by Magnolia Avenue as one more stop but we were able to get a ton of amazing shots in the previous locations. Plus, it was still too dang cold outside and we all were ready for warmth! But watching the two of them together was such a highlight! Right off the bat, you can see their friendship and care for each other. Their session was so easy for me because of their natural affection together.
Now, St. Augustine is one of my favorite places in Florida. It's a small city, tourist hotspot, college town, historic treasure and beach town all in one! It's the oldest city in the US too! We were lucky enough to be there during the holiday season so we experienced Nights of Lights where they decorate downtown St. Augustine with Christmas lights. It was so enchanting! Honestly, any time of year is a good time to schedule an engagement session (or any kind of session) in downtown St. Augustine. Pro tip: When planning your St. Augustine engagement session, I would recommend scheduling the session for earlier in the day to avoid the crowds in the main tourist locations.
